Cerulean Space in the Community

At Cerulean Space, we are committed to using art and creativity to strengthen communities, foster meaningful connections and contribute to positive social change. We advocate for promoting holistic creative wellbeing, increasing equitable access to mental health services and fostering collective growth and healing.

What does this mean?

  • Offering community-based art therapy services and programs to increase equitable accessibility.
  • Collaborating with likeminded community-based organisations (e.g. not-for-profit, charities, aged care) to drive positive mental health outcomes.
  • Building communities and connections for art therapists and other mental health professionals.
  • Giving back to communities and contributing to meaningful humanitarian causes.

Cerulean Space’s Community Involvement

Here are some examples of our past and ongoing community involvements.

Harmony, Community and Creativity

River Nile School is an independent school for young women from refugee backgrounds supporting them to thrive and achieve their dreams. The River Nile School Harmony Block Party is an annual event celebrating strengths, talents and passions of refugee and asylum seeking youth. Cerulean Space had the privilege to host an art therapy stall at this inspiring and heartwarming event for two consecutive years, with the intention to foster connection and promote creative wellbeing. The themes of “love, courage, growth, inspiration, and connection” emerged in the artwork created by the community. This collective experience highlighted the unique power of art to bring people together, foster belonging, and provide meaningful avenues for self-expression beyond words.

Community-based Art Therapy

Community-based art therapy fosters individual and collective healing through creativity, while increasing the accessibility and affordability. Since early 2024, Cerulean Space has facilitated numerous ongoing and one-off art therapy programs for children, teens and adults across multiple community centres. The programs are strength-based and person-centred, designed to promote creative wellbeing, enable self-expression, and foster social connection.

Creative Ageing: Art Therapy in Residential Aged Care

Cerulean Space facilitated fortnightly group art therapy sessions at a residential aged care based north-west Melbourne. Art therapy enabled creative expression, fostered social connection, improved mood and promoted agency. The residents laughed, sang and shared their stories while making art. Unlike art and craft classes, art therapy offer the participants have creative autonomy while the art therapist provides scaffolded support and maintains therapeutic attunement with the group.

Age care residents benefited from the following outcomes:

  • Fostered social connections
  • Improved mood
  • Fine motor skills
  • Reminiscence / prompted memories

Collaboration, Innovation and Creativity

Art therapy for founders and entrepreneurs

The Canberra Innovation Network (CBRIN) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to empowering entrepreneurs to “make meaningful impact and change the world”. CBRIN offers the entrepreneurial community both the opportunity and the space for collaboration, innovation and networking. In October 2024, CBRIN partnered with Cerulean Space Art Therapy to pilot a corporate art therapy program for mental health at the CBRIN co-working space and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants. During the one-hour art therapy session, the participants embraced the opportunity for creativity, mindfulness and connection, and expressed feeling more present and relaxed after the session.

Innovation Project and Community Collaboration

Interactive presentation on art therapy and neuroscience with students to support their innovation project

In 2025, Cerulean Space collaborated with Newmark Primary School and Aeralife Aged Care to deliver innovative and meaningful inventions to support the mental wellbeing of aged care residents. Creative Self-care for Carers

Carers for their loved ones living with mental health challenges can feel both rewarding and overwhelming at times. With the support of Mind Australia, Cerulean Space was honoured to facilitate an art therapy workshop for carers, offering them a space for respite, creativity and self-care.

Mental Health Awareness Month: Create and Connect

October mental health awareness month is dedicated to promoting mental wellbeing and reducing stigma. In 2025, Cerulean Space hosted a free “Create and Connect – Art therapy for wellbeing” group open to the community. The session provided a safe space to make art, share and connect with other participants.

Building the Vision of the Australian Art Therapy Profession

Despite the extra challenging times the Australian art therapy profession has faced in the past two years, when art therapists come together, they demonstrate endless passion, commitment, authenticity and hope. At the inaugural La Trobe University Master of Art Therapy Alumni event, Kanling facilitated a Lego Serious Play workshop where the participants co-created the vision for the Australian art therapy profession. “We are stronger together” was one of themes that emerged repeatedly during the session.

Art Therapy in Schools Community of Practice

Cerulean Space is the convenor of the Art Therapy in Schools Community of Practice (CoP), with the goal to offer a safe and supported space of school-based art therapists to exchange their knowledge, practices and experience. Since the inception of the CoP, members have grown steadily spanning across Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific. Click here to read more about the CoP.

Giving back to the Community: Walk or Run for REACH

REACH Siem Reap provides integrated programs for impoverished Cambodian children to become change makers within their community, preparing them with life-skills to gain fair employment, and to break longstanding cycles of poverty within their family. Cerulean Space was a silver sponsor of 2025 Walk or Run for REACH event in Melbourne. As an organisation, we are proud to contribute a small part to REACH’s inspiring vision and cause. We look forward to continuing to find creative ways to support REACH and its mission.
