Benefits of Group Art Therapy
In addition to being more affordable, group work offers several unique therapeutic benefits, including:
- Shared experiences: Hearing others share similar situations or struggles as you can help you feel that you are not alone.
- Social learning: The group mimics the real world. You can test new skills and gain feedback in real-time in “safer” setting.
- Mutual problem solving: Group members can help each other to collaboratively problem solve, especially when exploring a common theme.
- Less intense: For some participants, one-on-one therapy may feel too confronting. Group art therapy offers a less intensive alternative.
- Social connection: Group work also provides an opportunity for social connection. Experience the collective energy from creating alongside others.
What Happens in a Group Art Therapy Workshop?
While there is no one single way of facilitating an art therapy session, here is what a theme-based group workshop might look like.
- The session typically begins with an overview of art therapy, as well as safety, confidentiality and boundary considerations.
- The participants may be invited to engage in a self-introduction and check-in activity.
- Depending on the theme and the nature of the workshop, sessions may involve one or more art making invitation(s). Participants are offered various art materials.
- Reflection and group discussions are often interwoven with art making throughout the session. Sharing is invited but optional.
- The degree of structure may also vary dependent on the therapeutic intention and the participants.
The art therapist may adapt the plan and approach during a session based on the collective needs of the participants in the moment. Moreover, everything is an invitation! Participants can engage in alternative art making activities if the prompt or invitation does not sit well with them.
