Individual Art Therapy

Children

Creativity is an intuitive way for many children to express themselves and make sense of the world. Art therapy can support children experiencing the following:

  • Difficulty with emotional regulation
  • Frequently feeling anxious
  • Challenges with maintaining focus
  • Struggling with social interactions
  • Trouble adapting to change
  • Seeking a non-verbal way of expression

Adolescents

Adolescence is a period filled with growth and curiosity. As young people navigate change and develop a stronger sense of self, art therapy can help with:

  • Self-expression through art making
  • Exploring self-image and identity
  • Experimenting through creative risk taking
  • Processing inner feelings or struggles
  • Strengthening self-esteem
  • Building inner resources to overcome challenges

Adults

Whether talk therapy didn’t work and you are looking for an alternate form of support, or art is your way of expression, art therapy can support adults through:

  • Reduced anxiety and improved mood
  • Offering a non-verbal way to explore thoughts and feelings
  • Deepened self-reflection and insights
  • Working through situational crisis or life decisions
  • Embodied experiences and increased mind-body connection
  • Finding a creative space for self-care and “me time”

How Art Therapy Works

Are you wondering how making art in a therapeutic setting can help you? Here are some core therapeutic factors of art therapy:

  • Releasing tension and facilitate regulation through kinaesthetic and sensory engagement with materials.
  • Finding your answers through the art: Generate insights and deepen self-awareness.
  • Externalising inner thoughts and feelings that are difficult to put into words.
  • Being witnessed, co-regulated and supported by a qualified and registered art therapist.
  • Art as therapy: Finding flow and mindfulness in the present moment through creativity.
  • Embracing uncertainties and discomfort: Engaging in creative risk taking and problem solving.

What to Expect in Art Therapy?

Individual art therapy sessions are tailored to your goals and preferences. Having said that, you might be wondering, what does that mean in reality?

  1. Aligned to your therapeutic goals – The art therapist prepares the sessions to support your therapeutic goals or intentions. The approach, material offerings and art making invitations can be adapted during the session to meet you where you are on the day.
  2. Safety and therapeutic attunement – The therapist aims to foster a supportive and non-judgmental space for you to show up as your authentic self, and feel safe enough to engage in creative expressions.
  3. Choice and agency – Art materials and art making prompts are offered as invitations. You have control and agency to shape the session to serve your needs and intention.
  4. Structure – The degree of structure is informed by your needs and preferences. Some participants prefer complete creative freedom, whereas others feel more at ease with structure and guidance.

While there is no one way of facilitating an art therapy session, a typical session may entail an initial check-in, one or more art making invitations and activities, reflection and discussion (as much or as little based on your preference), and if appropriate, a check-in at the end of the session.
